Fräulein Elene — an introduction to sandingology
Hello — this girl has got me all shaken up. Elene... she called me last night. She's a friend from my student days, and she's planning to sand 150 square meters of floor with her own hands. Can you imagine? She's split up with her husband and I think she no longer knows where to direct all that surging energy.
She has parquet at home that her grandfather laid. I danced on that parquet in my student years and scrubbed it clean the next day. We girls used to get together when there was no electricity and the country was falling apart. We had a battery radio. We stayed up all night. We rejoiced in our youth and in life.
Now my dear Fräulein Elene is determined to sand 150 square meters without a craftsman (I say “tsiklovka” — “mokhvetsa” is, I think, the Georgian word; I use one or the other).
And who else would she turn to but me? She knows I've spent my whole life in renovations. Repairing, remodeling, changing the place and function of furniture is my weakness. But here I have to confess: floor sanding is new territory for me too, yet I can't say no to Elene. I have to help her. Will you join in? Let's slowly work through the details, and then maybe we'll even think about a dissertation in sandingology.
Sanding theory
For an academic degree we need theory, at least a little. In today's world, the first source of information is the internet. I wonder what Georgian Wikipedia says about the term “mokhvetsa” (sanding). We search, and not a peep. Apparently Georgian wiki authors haven't got round to floor sanding yet.
Floor sanding (tsiklovka) is: the process of mechanically treating a wood surface, during which the damaged, worn thin top layer of the wood is scraped and sanded off in order to subsequently lacquer or oil the wood surface.

Delicious, isn't it? Now let's follow the story of floor sanding step by step.
Can every parquet floor be sanded?
No. Sanding makes parquet thinner, so it can't be sanded endlessly. For parquet to be sanded, it must have the resource for it — that is, sufficient wear thickness from the tongue-and-groove joint to its surface.
- Each sanding makes the parquet thinner by 0.5 mm to 1 mm on average. So if we want our parquet to serve us for a long time, we shouldn't sand it too often. For example, solid oak parquet withstands 5–7 sandings, while engineered (three-layer) parquet withstands 2–4 on average.
- The second reason parquet cannot be sanded is when it has come loose, is rotten or wobbles. In that case the floor must first be secured or the damaged boards replaced.
In this respect Fräulein Elene's parquet is still in shape — sanding is possible.
DIY floor sanding?
Nothing is impossible, but I'll confess: I don't understand why you would want to sand a floor at home yourself, especially as a woman. The only justification is probably that you don't have enough money for a craftsman while the damaged floor is really getting on your nerves. The Fräulein certainly has the money, but once she sets her mind on something, you can't talk her out of it.
The main principle: the floor must be sanded well — with sandpaper. In Georgian, sandpaper (“shkurka”) is called “zumpara” . Keep in mind that the floor must be sanded evenly so that after applying lacquer or oil the wood has a uniform, perfect look.
What tools are used and how many types of floor sanding are there?
Sanding is done with special floor sanding machines. In Georgia, Russian and German machines are actively used:
- Russian sanding is the name for treating a floor with 1 machine — either a Soviet Russian machine or a German Hummel.
- German sanding is the name for the full process that finishes with a German three-disc machine — the Trio.
1. Russian sanding with a Russian machine
The Russian machine works with a belt system and is designed for rough, heavy work. It does not take a single continuous belt, so the joints leave marks. If the sanding craftsman is not experienced, a Russian machine can leave waves and dips in the parquet. The surface treated with this machine does not come out perfect.
2. Russian sanding with a German machine (Lägler Hummel)
The German machine Hummelworks on a belt principle similar to the Russian machine. However, unlike the Russian one, it takes a single, seamless sanding belt, so it leaves no joint lines.
If you choose the economical option, it's better to find a craftsman who will do the job with a German Hummel. Sandpaper costs 1–2 GEL more, but the result is an incomparably flatter and cleaner surface.
3. Premium German sanding (Lägler Trio)
In German sanding, the finish with the Triois decisive. It is a three-disc planetary machine that polishes the wood fibers to the finest level. After the Trio, not a single circular mark or micro-defect remains on the floor. Depending on the condition of the floor, the craftsman may even use only the Trio.
How are corners and the area under radiators done? (Lägler Flip)
Sanding hard-to-reach places is problematic — along the walls, in corners and under central heating radiators. Some craftsmen treat these areas with an angle grinder, which fills the room with terrible dust and leaves gouged dips in the floor.
Professional craftsmen use a special German machine — the Flip, which has a dust extractor and a special long nose for working under radiators.
📊 Floor sanding machine comparison: which is better?
| Machine | Work stage | Dust level | Surface quality | Price per m² |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Russian machine | Rough, coarse sanding | Dusty | Basic (leaves joint marks) | 17 ₾ |
| Lägler Hummel (German) | Rough and medium sanding | Dust-free (with bag) | Flat, seamless surface | 17 ₾ |
| Lägler Trio (German) | Three-disc finish / polishing | 100% dust-free | Premium mirror-like | 25 ₾ |
| Lägler Flip (German) | Corners, radiators, edges | Dust-free | Perfect corners | Included in the price |
🇬🇪 Floor sanding in the regions: Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Mestia, Zugdidi and Poti
We are often asked: “Does the floor sanding craftsman travel outside Tbilisi?” — Yes, our team also takes regional orders! In the regions there is a serious shortage of qualified craftsmen working with German dust-free equipment (Hummel, Trio), so we regularly carry out projects in different parts of Georgia:
Trips to Rustavi, Mtskheta, Saguramo and Kojori-Tskneti are at standard Tbilisi rates with minimal transport costs.
Humidity is high along the coast. Here, along with sanding, choosing a quality water-resistant German lacquer or Hardwax-Oil is crucial.
In the cities of western Georgia we often treat both old oak floors in private houses and engineered parquet in newly built apartments.
At high-mountain resorts there is demand for the full restoration of solid plank floors in wooden cottages, family hotels and restaurants.
❓ Does the room get dusty during sanding?
If the sanding machines are modern and in good working order, the dust is collected in a special multi-layer bag and the process runs dust-free . Walls, ceiling and furniture stay clean!
Sanding a painted floor (“painted floorboards”)
Sanding a floor painted with thick oil paint is a much more labor-intensive process — the paint heats up, sticks to the sandpaper and costs go up. Many craftsmen refuse such floors altogether, and those who take them on work at a different rate.
In such cases it is ideal to use a coarse special Hummel sandpaper (for example, grit 12 or 16), which removes the paint quickly without damaging the wood.
Gaps have appeared in the floor — what should we do?
During sanding, the dirt accumulated over the years between the parquet boards is cleaned out and the gaps become more noticeable. These gaps must be filled with a special wood filler.
How is professional filler made?
The best wood filler is made on site: the clean, fine wood dust produced during sanding is mixed with a special binding liquid. The resulting paste-like mass exactly matches the natural color of your parquet.
⚠️ Important tip: the filler should be spread over the entire floor evenly rather than in spots, so that no blotches show on the floor after lacquering.
❓ Frequently asked questions about floor sanding
1. How long does it take to sand a 50–100 m² apartment?
An experienced craftsman takes 1–2 working days to sand and lacquer a standard 50–70 square meter apartment. On larger areas (100–150 m²) the process takes 2 to 3 days.
2. When can I walk on the floor and bring furniture back in?
Careful walking in socks is possible 24 hours after the last coat of lacquer. Bringing in heavy furniture and laying rugs is recommended after 5–7 days, once the lacquer or oil has reached its final hardness.
3. What is the difference between 17-GEL and 25-GEL sanding?
17-GEL sanding is done with 1 machine (Russian or Hummel) and is intended for a basic renewal. 25-GEL German sanding includes the full cycle and finishes with the three-disc Lägler Trio planetary machine, which gives an absolutely smooth, mirror-like surface without any waves or lines.
4. Can I order floor sanding in the regions (Batumi, Kutaisi, Mestia, Rustavi)?
Yes! Our team takes regional orders in all cities and resorts of Georgia. The area should preferably be at least 50 m² or more. Transport and timing are agreed individually in advance.
5. What's better after sanding — lacquer or oil?
Lacquer forms a hard protective layer and does not require frequent care. Natural oil and Hardwax-Oil penetrate deep into the wood, preserve its natural texture and allow local repairs.
Back to our story...
Elene kept saying: “Let's rent a sanding machine.” She'd looked up videos online and already thought of herself as the queen of floor sanding. What else could we do — we started calling around. It turned out the machines are only rented to experienced craftsmen, and even then only to people they know. I was a little glad — hopefully my friend would change her mind.
The second option was to do it with small hand-held machines, but 150 square meters turned out to be too much even for Elene.
In the end we were saved — we called a floor sanding craftsman. He was polite, and came with German machines. He told us: “I'll do the sanding for you — you just choose whether you want lacquer or oil”.
